Once corporate data gets out in the open, you can assume it’s fair game for hackers, governments, and just about anyone else who wants it.

However, even the most in-the-know security pros were taken aback by how much data the US government has been able to acquire — and how it was able to tap into well-known Internet companies like Google, Apple, Dropbox, and Microsoft. Thousands of businesses trust these companies with their data every day. It’s now perfectly fine for security engineers to proclaim that they were correct, and that data should no longer be considered private once it leaves the confines of a company’s firewall.
