CIA-funded, data-mining startup Palantir is starting to garner attention and is raising money at up to an $8 billion valuation according to sources.

Palo Alto-based Palantir may not be as sexy or easy to understand as its consumer-facing counterparts, but the company is attracting a similar type of interest–and valuation–from investors. With an impressive list of backers that includes billionaires Kenneth Langoneand Stanley Druckenmiller, investment boutique Allen and Co. and hedge fund Tiger Global, the company is currently valued at $4 billion, based on a round of funding that closed in May 2012.
